Duong Dong / Long Beach: Best all-round base for first-timers, sunset bars, restaurants, and easy airport access.
Sunset Town (An Thoi): Great if you want cable car access, night shows, and dramatic architecture; quieter in daytime, livelier after dark.
Ong Lang: More relaxed and green; good for slower trips and boutique stays.
Northwest coast: Resort-heavy and calmer, ideal for couples or full resort days.
Best Time Of Year

Nov-Apr: Best weather window (dry season), lower rain risk, clear sunsets and better island-hopping days.
May-Oct: Rainy season with short heavy showers; still possible to travel but keep plans flexible.
Shoulder months: Late Oct/early Nov and April can offer better prices with decent weather.

What I Would Budget
Phu Quoc can be cheap if you stay local and keep transport simple, but it is not the cheapest part of Vietnam. Island logistics push prices up. A comfortable mid-range trip is usually built around a basic hotel or apartment, Grab rides or scooter hire, local seafood meals, and one or two paid attractions.

Transport Reality
The island is larger than it looks on a map. Sunset Town, Duong Dong, Ong Lang, and the northern resort areas are not quick walks from each other. If you stay in the wrong area for your plans, you will spend half the trip sitting in cars or negotiating scooter rides. For a short first visit, I would choose either Duong Dong / Long Beach for convenience or Sunset Town if the cable car and night architecture are the whole point of the trip.
Who Phu Quoc Is For
Phu Quoc works best for beach breaks, couples, families, resort travellers, and people who want an easy island add-on after Hanoi, Da Nang, or Ho Chi Minh City. It is less ideal if you want dense street life, walkable neighbourhoods, or the cultural depth you get in older Vietnamese cities.
Mistakes to Avoid
Do not book the cheapest place you find without checking the location. A bargain room far from food, transport, and beaches can become expensive fast. I would also avoid planning every day around the weather. In rainy season, leave space in the schedule and keep the big paid day flexible.
